The Strike Zone Bowling Alley in Williston is set for a significant upgrade thanks to a recently approved STAR Fund Grant by the Williston City Commission.

The grant, which contributes up to $28,000 through the Flex PACE Interest Buydown program, will fund the installation of state-of-the-art Brunswick Boost string pins, replacing the existing pin setters.

Brad Peterson, owner of Strike Zone, highlighted the benefits of the new string pins, noting that the upgrade will enhance the family-friendly atmosphere of the alley. "String Pin bowling pins from Brunswick Boost will make us the first-string pin bowling alley in North Dakota. This change means more fun for families, with features like automatic bumpers and reduced lane breakdowns. Our patrons will enjoy high-quality bowling and entertainment, with the continued ability to host tournaments and leagues," Peterson said.

Located at 1804 2nd Ave. West, Strike Zone offers not only bowling but also an arcade and a sports bar, making it a popular local entertainment venue.

Keith Olson, Director of the Small Business Development Center in Williston, emphasized the safety improvements that come with the new system. "Pinsetter machines are increasingly difficult to maintain due to their danger and the scarcity of qualified repair personnel. The string pin system significantly enhances safety for Strike Zone employees by reducing the risk of accidents. It's exciting to see Strike Zone adopting this innovative concept," Olson stated.

In addition to the grant for Strike Zone, the Williston City Commission approved STAR Fund grants for other projects at their meeting on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Stealth Energy Group will receive up to $73,000 to expand their office and shop space by purchasing property at 10315 Camp Dr. The company specializes in pipeline construction and repair, dirt work, environmental services, and safety consulting training.

The STAR Fund is supported by a voter-approved one cent city sales tax, with 75 percent allocated to offset city infrastructure costs and the remaining 25 percent dedicated to job creation, business development, and retention efforts.

A seven-member advisory board that meets monthly oversees the STAR Fund portion of the tax.
