The North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Ag in the Classroom Program are inviting first- through third-grade educators across the state to apply for worm soil conservation kits aimed at bringing hands-on agricultural science into early education.

The new initiative gives students a chance to explore the often-overlooked world beneath their feet, focusing on how worms contribute to soil health and plant growth. Each kit includes age-appropriate lesson plans from the National Ag in the Classroom Matrix, a worm farm kit, and a children’s book designed to help teachers introduce core concepts about soil ecosystems in a fun, interactive way.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring encouraged teachers to make use of the program as a way to inspire curiosity about agriculture from an early age. “I encourage educators to take advantage of this opportunity to embed agriculture into their classrooms,” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. “Teachers and students will get insight into the world of worms and learn about the vital role they play in keeping soil healthy.”

Educators who receive a kit will have until April 1st, 2026, to incorporate the materials and lesson plans into their classroom curriculum. A follow-up survey will be distributed later that month to gather feedback and track student engagement.
