In a joint effort with the Williams County Vector Control District, the United States Air Force Reserve's (USAFR) 910th Airlift Wing from Youngstown Air Reserve Station will conduct an adulticide mission over Williston and Watford City.

The operation is scheduled to occur between July 15 and July 19, 2024, depending on weather conditions.

Residents in these areas can expect to see large military aircraft flying at low altitudes near sunset during the mission.

The USAFR will be utilizing Trumpet EC, an adulticide treatment with the active ingredient Naled.

According to the EPA, Naled has been, registered for use in the United States since 1959, is primarily used to control adult mosquitoes.

For mosquito control, Naled is dispensed as an ultra-low volume (ULV) spray, which releases fine aerosol droplets containing minimal amounts of the active ingredient.

These droplets drift through the air, killing mosquitoes on contact, with only a small amount reaching the ground.

For most people, no special precautions are necessary during the spraying. You do not need to leave the area while spraying occurs. However, it's always wise to minimize unnecessary exposure to pesticides when possible.

Some individuals, especially those sensitive to chemicals or with pre-existing respiratory issues, may choose to take extra steps to further reduce exposure:

  • Stay indoors with windows closed during the spraying.
  • If you are outside during spraying and see the spray, avoid contact. If contact occurs, rinse your skin and eyes with water.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables from your garden before storing, cooking, or eating.
  • Cover outdoor items like furniture and grills during spraying. Bring pets, pet food dishes, and children's toys indoors. Rinse any uncovered items left outside before use.
  • If you experience a reaction to the mosquito spray, consult your doctor or call the regional Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
