As spring arrives in Williston and across North Dakota, more people are getting out, hitting the road, and enjoying the warmer weather. With increased travel and activity comes a steady need for one critical resource that often goes overlooked—blood donations. While many things change with the seasons, the demand for blood remains constant, and in North Dakota, supplies are often lower than ideal.

Williston Blood Drive April 6–7: What to Know Before You Donate

That’s why an upcoming blood drive in Williston is so important. The event will take place April 6th and 7th from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days at the New Armory. It’s a great opportunity for community members to step up and help ensure hospitals have the blood they need for emergencies, surgeries, and ongoing treatments.

There are several ways to donate, each with its own set of requirements. Whole blood donation is the most common. Donors can give every 56 days, up to six times per year. To qualify, you must be in good health, feeling well, at least 16 years old in most states, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.

For those looking to make an even bigger impact, Power Red donations allow donors to give a concentrated dose of red blood cells. This type of donation can be done every 112 days, up to three times per year. Male donors must typically be at least 17 years old, at least 5’1” tall, and weigh at least 130 pounds. Female donors must be at least 19 years old, at least 5’3” tall, and weigh at least 150 pounds.

There’s also the AB Elite Plasma donation, which is especially valuable since AB plasma can be used for patients of any blood type. These donations can be made every 28 days, up to 13 times a year, but donors must have type AB blood, be at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds.
