Mind the Rules! Prohibited Items in Williston’s Garbage
The nice weather has all of us out working in the garage, shed, and even in the yard. If you missed Williston's free landfill day, last Saturday, you might have a fair amount of stuff to get rid of. There are some things in Williston that you can find yourself being in a lot of trouble with if you try to throw them away in your garbage can or by bringing them to the landfill. According to the city's website, there is certain trash not allowed to be disposed of in our local landfill.
Here are the items not accepted
- ANY liquid waste not in household quantities
- Unrinsed pesticide containers
- Used oil-waste oil: A waste oil disposal site is located on the west side of the former Public Works building, the Gene Emery Building located at 809 5th Street East.
- Liquid Paint is not allowed. Paint cans may be accepted in MSW but must be solidified and dried out prior to disposal.
- PCB waste/oils
- Hazardous Wastes/Materials with the following properties: Ignitables [solvents, paints, and fuels]; Reactives [materials reactive with water or any other material]; or Corrosives
- Light bulbs/fixtures: Mercury-containing devices, fluorescent lighting [except in household quantities], thermostats, ballasts, and capacitors.
- Copier toners
- Raw or digested Sewage Sludges, lime sludges, grit chamber cleanings, and other sludges
- Manure
- Septic tank pumpings
- Infectious wastes, except in amounts normally found in household waste
- Large quantities of soluble waste [fly ash, salt, fertilizers, etc.] 25 lbs or more that may spontaneously combust
- Pit liners [considered special waste]
- Any filter socks [considered special waste]
- Pipeline Pigs [considered special waste]
- Invert off of pit liners or rig sites [considered special waste]
- Radioactive/Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM) waste exceeding five (5.0) picocuries/gram (pCi) [considered special waste]
- Anything marked as acute hazardous waste

- 5-55 gallon containers [must be clean and rinsed]
- Plastic barrels [must be triple rinsed and cut in half]
- Thread protectors
- Friable [properly contained and with required documentation] and Nonfriable Asbestos
- All like material
Remember if you bring trash to the landfill, all loads must be secured with either a tarp or tie-down straps. A $25.00 fee will be applied to all unsecured loads for the 1st offense, and a $50.00 fee thereafter.
