Have you ever used the North Dakota Department of Transportation's kiosks before for renewing your tabs? It's so convenient and quick, unlike a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles, which at times can be a lengthy and tedious process.

Small Towns Might Lose Their DMV Kiosks

This is a post from a hardware store located in Hillsboro, North Dakota, which is a small town halfway between Grand Forks and Fargo on Interstate 29.

According to the post, the North Dakota Department of Transportation will be shutting down numerous kiosks across the state, mostly in rural towns, including this one in Hillsboro, tomorrow, January 24th, 2026. Kiosks located in larger population centers are expected to remain open.

It appears this business tried to keep its kiosk for its customers, but ultimately, the state had the final say.
A List of Small Towns Losing Their Kiosks in our Area
According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation's website, the following kiosks will close permanently starting tomorrow: Bowman, Carson, Washburn, Mott, and Napoleon. You can get a full list of all the available kiosks in the state, and others that are closing here.
Why are they Closing?
The reason for the closures, according to the ND Department of Transportation, is increasing costs and limited use.
Bismarck-Mandan Kiosk Locations
You can find these in Bismarck at the Stamart Travel Center - off of I-94 at Exit 161, Family Fare - 835 South Washington Street, and the Motor Vehicle Office inside the NDDOT Transportation Building. In Mandan, Family Fare - 500 Burlington Street, Southeast.
If you haven't used these kiosks before, trust me, you want to. They are convenient and a time saver. It's too bad that a few of our small towns in the area are losing theirs.
