Big news is coming out of Williston, and it’s a development many residents have been waiting for. Target is officially coming to Williston, marking a major milestone for the city and the entire western North Dakota region.

The City of Williston Economic Development Department (WED) announced that Target Corporation has selected Williston Square as the site for a new store measuring more than 134,000 square feet. This will be the first Target location in western North Dakota and only the sixth in the entire state, underscoring Williston’s growing importance as a regional hub for commerce and development.

City leaders say the announcement reflects both current momentum and confidence in the region’s future growth. Williston Mayor Howard Klug praised the collective effort that helped secure the major retailer, noting that years of recruitment, planning, engineering, and design laid the groundwork for this achievement. Mayor Klug described Williston Square as a “giant puzzle” that is steadily coming together, beginning with local businesses like Genesis, followed by restaurants, and now anchored by a nationally recognized retailer that is expected to attract even more development.

Portfolio Commissioner Tori Siemieniewski echoed that sentiment, calling Target’s arrival a strong signal of confidence in Williston’s economy. She emphasized that the project required careful planning and teamwork and reinforces Williston’s position as a commercial center for western North Dakota.

Economic Development Director Anna Nelson also highlighted the collaborative process, saying it has been a privilege to work with Target to meet both local and regional needs. Nelson added that the new store is a clear indicator of growth already underway and a preview of what’s to come, while helping bring the master plan for Williston Square closer to reality.

The Target store will be located at 3022 Dakota Drive, just west of established tenants such as Slim Chickens, Genesis, Taco Bell, and 7 Brew. City officials say the project aligns with the broader vision for Williston Square as a vibrant live, work, play, shop, dine, and stay destination. Once complete, the development is expected to boost traffic, support the regional economy, and add another major amenity for Williston residents and visitors alike.
