Williston residents are ready to celebrate America’s birthday in style this Friday—and nothing says “Happy Independence Day” quite like lighting up the sky with fireworks and hoping you don’t accidentally singe your lawn.

But before you break out the Roman candles and the glow sticks, the Williston Police Department wants to make sure you know the rules—because the only thing worse than a dud firework is a $250 fine for setting it off at the wrong time.

Here’s What Is Legal In Williston ND:

  • Fireworks are only allowed within city limits on July 4th—and you can keep the party sparkling until 1:00 AM on July 5th.
  • Get caught launching your grand finale outside that window? That’s a $250 fine. Do it again in the same year? That’ll cost you $500. Ouch.
  • And Mother Nature has a say, too. If Williams County’s fire danger rating hits “Very High” (that’s the orange zone on the fire danger rainbow) or higher—and a burn ban is issued—your fireworks plans go up in smoke. No sparklers, no bonfires, no roasting marshmallows over a backyard campfire.

Not Exactly Sure Of Things? The Williston Police Department has you covered:

Oh, and remember—if your fireworks are illegal, they might get seized. Nobody wants to watch their stash get carted off while everyone else oohs and ahhs. It does happen!

So, this 4th of July, celebrate big—but keep it safe, legal, and local. Light up the sky, not your neighbor’s garage. Happy Independence Day, Williston, and North Dakota!
