Where to Take Yard Waste in Williston, North Dakota: Your Spring Cleanup Guide
Spring has officially arrived! It's the season when the sound of chirping birds is only slightly drowned out by the unmistakable roar of lawnmowers across town. With all the beautiful weather we’ve had lately, it's official—spring cleanup season has begun!
And that means one thing: yard waste, and LOTS of it! If your lawn is anything like mine, it looks like a tornado of leaves and grass clippings had a party all winter long, and left the mess to clean up. So, what do we do with all this yard stuff? Well, starting today, compost containers are officially open for the season!

Where to Dump (Leaves & Grass ONLY!)
If you’ve got leaves and grass clippings to get rid of (and let’s be honest, we all do), you’ve got four compost locations in town to make your life easier:
Public Works – 5th St E & 8th Ave E
Western Star Ball Complex – 19th Ave W & 15th St W
Rickard Elementary School – 14th St E & 2nd Ave E
Harvest Hills – Prairie Commons between 44th Ave W & Long Branch Ave
What NOT to Do
Before you start tossing things in the bins like a game of compost basketball, let’s go over a few spring cleaning rules:
- No branches! Those need to go to the landfill (or be neatly bundled for pickup).
- No garbage! That ruins the whole load. Keep it clean, folks!
- No bags! (Unless you dispose of them properly in the 300-gallon containers on-site.)
If you have branches, you’ve got two options:
Haul them to the City Landfill (5176 134th Ave NW) – It’s $20 a ton or $7 minimum.
Bundle them into 3-4 foot sections, light enough for one person to lift, and place them on the boulevard. Then, give sanitation a call at 701.577.6368 for pickup.
Recycling? Let's Cover That Too!
If your spring cleaning includes a mountain of cardboard, don’t just toss it—recycle it! You can drop off your cardboard (and paper) at:
Western Star Ball Complex
Rickard Elementary School
Harvest Hills
Recycling Center (409 1st St E)
Spring is all about fresh starts, so let’s do our part to keep our city looking great. Happy cleaning, and may your lawn be greener than your neighbor’s!
