Bismarck, ND (KEYZ) Senator Kevin Cramer may require an amputation after suffering a serious injury to his hand.

The senator injured his right hand seriously over the weekend while working in the garden. The injury required immediate surgery for the 61-year-old lawmaker. While recovering, Cramer will remain in North Dakota due to a high risk of infection and for the possibility of amputation of one of the fingers on his right hand.

Cramer will miss Senate votes and hearings this week but is scheduled to head back to Capitol Hill next month.

The senator said he remained “alert and in good spirits,” and despite his injury, he didn’t appear to lose his sense of humor, noting that he expects to be doling out a lot of left-handed fist bumps.
