North Dakota Children’s Cabinet Report Aims To Improve Services For Families

The North Dakota Children’s Cabinet has released its annual report highlighting efforts to improve coordination and services for children and families across the state.

Lt. Gov. Michelle Strinden announced the report Tuesday. The Children’s Cabinet works with state agencies, lawmakers, tribal nations and community organizations to coordinate care and address issues affecting children.

The cabinet was created in 2019 and includes 15 members representing state government, the North Dakota Supreme Court, tribal nations, the Governor’s Office and community partners. Members also include a parent and private service provider.

The Legislature approved a change in 2025 that moved administration of the Children’s Cabinet from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Governor’s Office.

“Bringing the Children's Cabinet into the Governor's Office has further prioritized children and families within this administration. We will continue to listen, learn and identify solutions that improve the lives of our youngest citizens,” Strinden said.

The annual report highlights efforts to strengthen local coordination on children's issues, improve communication among service providers and better understand the availability of community resources.

The cabinet also traveled throughout North Dakota to meet with stakeholders, learn about programs and identify practices that could be expanded elsewhere.

Two areas received particular attention from cabinet subcommittees: school readiness and services for youth with complex needs.

“Sharing this report highlights the tremendous efforts of people across North Dakota who are working every day to improve the lives of our children,” Axtman said. “From supporting families during the earliest years of a child’s life to addressing complex cases that require multiple partners at the table, the Children’s Cabinet is digging in, bringing people together and finding pathways toward meaningful solutions.”
