North Dakota Hay Hotline Activated As Drought Grips Parts Of The State

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has activated North Dakota’s Hay Hotline as dry conditions and drought continue across parts of the state.

The program connects ranchers looking for hay with producers who have hay available for sale, as well as those offering pasture or hayland for rent.

“Ranchers who need hay, or those with hay to sell or with pasture or hayland to rent may use our online form and map, or give us a call,” Goehring said. “Your name and information will be added to the Hay Hotline map for other producers to find nearby forage resources.”

Producers can view available resources or submit listings through the Hay Hotline online. A dedicated hotline is also available at 701-328-5110 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

State officials are also asking producers to report drought conditions through Condition Monitoring Observer Reports, or CMOR. Reports can be submitted directly to the National Drought Mitigation Center or through local North Dakota State University Extension offices.

“Submitting a report helps provide a better understanding of local drought impacts that may not be apparent in broader-scale climate data,” Goehring said. “The reports are used in developing the U.S. Drought Monitor map, which triggers federal and state drought assistance and response efforts.”

NDSU Extension recommends submitting a report once a week during the growing season. Reports help track changing conditions and are displayed on a CMOR map. Contact information is not publicly displayed without permission.
