Seasonal Sparkle in North Dakota – When and How Much We Invest in Decorations
The weather over the weekend was perfect! Walmart was packed, and I mosied through the isles getting my monthly purchases, I noticed everyone had Christmas decorations in their carts. Lights, candy canes, wreaths, and extension chords of all kinds! I thought it seemed too late even to start decorating. Today's Homeowner did a survey asking when Americans hang their Christmas lights, and how much they will spend on decorations.
Let's cover spending first. According to the survey, here is what was spent in our region just on holiday lights:
- North Dakota - $150.00
- South Dakota - $209.00
- Minnesota - $540.00
- Montana $180.00
Now, let's cover when our region decorates:
- North Dakota - October
- South Dakota - December 1st
- Minnesota - November (Before Thanksgiving)
- Montana - October
Now, let's settle the great debate: White or colored lights?
- North Dakota - Colored
- South Dakota - Colored
- Minnesota - Colored
- Montana - Colored
Just for conversation, Iowa, Connecticut, and Rhode Island all prefer white lights, and Idaho, New Mexico, West Virginia, and New Hampshire do not have a preference. Am I the only one that found that weird?
While you are putting the finishing touches on your holiday decorations, please know that your efforts are being noticed and that they are greatly appreciated. The best way to soak in everything that the season has to offer is to drive about on a night when there is no one else around. It makes no difference if you make sure that every square inch of the house is illuminated or if you only have time to accomplish the basics. The fact that you make an effort for your family, neighborhood, and town contributes significantly to everyone's Christmas!
