North Dakota’s Speed Limit Is Going Up—Is Your Car Ready for 80 MPH?
Starting August 1, 2025, North Dakota drivers will be able to legally cruise at 80 miles per hour on select stretches of interstate highways—up from the current 70 MPH limit. While that means we’ll be shaving precious minutes off those long drives across the prairie, it also means it's time to prepare ourselves—and our vehicles—for life in the faster lane.

How Are Your Tires
First, let’s talk tires. Your tires are the unsung heroes of highway driving, and they need to be in top shape to handle those extra 10 MPH. Check the tread on your tires and make sure they’re properly inflated, and maybe even treat your ride to a rotation. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, properly maintained tires can significantly reduce the risk of high-speed blowouts and improve fuel efficiency.
Do Your Brakes Need Some Work
Second, give your brakes some love. You’ll be stopping from higher speeds now, which puts more strain on your braking system. Have them inspected for wear, and don’t ignore any squeaks or shimmies. The American Automobile Association recommends having your brakes checked at least once a year—or more often if you're about to be cruising at 80.

Avoid Those Distractions
And third: give your brain a tune-up, too. Higher speeds mean less reaction time, so distractions like your phone or digging for beef jerky in the glove box are even more dangerous. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that even small increases in speed can drastically increase crash severity. So stay alert, stay focused, and maybe save the karaoke session for the slower roads.
So North Dakota, buckle up and get ready! Just because we can go 80 doesn’t mean we need to drive like we’re qualifying for the Indy 500. A little preparation goes a long way—especially at higher speeds.
