19-year-old Arrested After Shots Fired At Williston Gathering

A 19-year-old man was arrested after an early morning shooting July 11 in northwest Williston, according to police.

Officers responded about 3:27 a.m. to the 900 block of Sixth Avenue NW after receiving reports of a gunshot. An officer already patrolling the area also reported hearing what was believed to be a single shot and responded immediately.

The investigation determined an altercation occurred during a gathering at a residence. Police said Bret Tyler Welsh, who was a passenger in a vehicle leaving the scene, allegedly fired one round from a handgun toward individuals outside. The shot narrowly missed multiple people. No injuries were reported.

Officers secured the scene, collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. Authorities said the investigation led to probable cause to arrest Welsh.

He was located a short time later at another residence and taken into custody without incident. Officers also recovered the handgun believed to have been used.

Welsh was transported to the Williams County Correctional Center and is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of discharging a firearm within city limits. Police said additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
