As winter settles in and mornings grow darker, it’s time to brush up on some vital school bus safety tips. The Williston Police Department reminds everyone that YELLOW isn’t just a cheerful color; when it comes to school buses, it means CAUTION! And when you see RED flashing lights and a RED stop sign, it’s your cue to STOP—no questions asked.

Here’s how we can all do our part to keep kids safe this season:

Slow Down in School Zones: Snow and ice can make roads slippery and stopping distances longer. Take it easy and approach school zones and bus stops with care.

Stay Alert: Low visibility in the dark or during snowfall makes it harder to see kids crossing streets. Keep your eyes peeled and your distractions at bay.

Know the Law: It’s illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing or the stop sign is out. You must remain stopped until the bus begins moving again, the driver signals you to proceed, or the flashing lights and stop sign are no longer activated.

Ignoring this law can come with a hefty price: a $50 fine and 6 points on your license. Ouch! Throw in the fact that lids could be injured, or worse is nothing to mess with either.

So, let’s work together to ensure our children—and our area school zones—stay safe, no matter what Mother Nature throws our way. After all, a little extra caution can make a big difference when it comes to protecting our most precious cargo: our kids.
