Lakes Around Williston Could See Harmful Algae Blooms

Are you heading to the lake this weekend with friends and family? If so, Williams County is asking for your help. The summer season is drawing near, and with it, the algae. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a potential hazard in certain of our lakes, including those that are located at Blacktail Dam and Epping/Springbrook Dam.

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality would like to bring to your attention the following information on HABs: A crust on the water, grass clippings, green cottage cheese, scum, or the appearance of green paint that has been spilled or green pea soup are all possible visual representations of blue-green algae.

Do not swim, water ski, or boat in places where the water is discolored or where there are foam, scum, or mats of green or blue-green algae on the water; do not let pets swim in or drink from affected waterways; and do not let children play in areas where the water is discolored.

Rinse off with clean water as quickly as possible if you or your pet has accidentally gone swimming in water that may have a bloom of cyanobacteria.
It is not a good idea to water lawns with murky water from lakes or ponds, especially if the water smells foul.
