UPDATE: The Level 3 Severe Weather area has been expanded. Here's the latest map from the National Weather Service in Bismarck. All the same hazards are in play. The timeline still looks like late afternoon to early evening for a line of storms to reach the Capital Region.

"North Dakota is setting up for a couple of very volatile weather days."

This is according to WDAY Chief Meteorologist Jesse Rinka last night on the 6 pm evening news. It's not very often you hear the TV meteorologists commit to severe weather when it comes to forecasts, but you could tell she meant business when she said that line.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck is in line with the significant severe weather potential.

Much of our listening area and a good portion of south-central and southeast North Dakota are in a Level 3 for a severe weather threat.

EVERYTHING is on the table today as far as storm hazards, including large hail up to baseball size, damaging winds up to 80 miles per hour, and even a few tornadoes.

What will be the timing for these storms?

We are expecting a hot and humid day with high temperatures around 90 degrees. This will give us the daytime heating needed that could bring us a significant severe weather event this afternoon and especially early evening.

It looks like the best chance for severe weather in the Bismarck-Mandan Capital Region will be around 7 pm.

Another round of severe weather is expected on Friday, but the severe weather threat will shift in the state.

Friday's severe weather looks to be mainly in eastern North Dakota, with once again the full gamut of hazards, including large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes.

Be very weather aware today in south-central North Dakota. Our meteorologists from Severe Weather Studios Radio Network will keep you updated on-air on this Townsquare Media Station.

Stay safe, everyone.
