Are you tired of paying taxes? Fed up with governmental bureaucracy? Ever dream of issuing your own currency or perhaps even knighting your pet cat? Look no further!

The vast, open plains of North Dakota are ripe for the picking, offering the perfect backdrop for the creation of your very own micronation.

Inspired by the success (or, at the very least, the continued existence) of other unrecognized micronations worldwide, a growing number of ambitious individuals are carving out their own sovereign enclaves within the peaceful borders of North Dakota.

Here's how you, too, can join this illustrious club of DIY nation-builders.

Step 1: Find Your Territory

North Dakota, with its expansive prairies and friendly neighbors, provides an ideal canvas. Scout out a piece of land—preferably one that's not already claimed by a farmer, a rancher, or a state park.

Once you've found your slice of paradise, plant your flag and declare your sovereignty.

It’s that simple!

Step 2: Draft Your Constitution

Every great nation needs a guiding document. Whether you choose to model your constitution after the U.S. Constitution, the Pirate Code, or a Dungeons & Dragons rulebook, the key is to be thorough.

Outline your government structure, citizen rights, and, most importantly, the dress code for your royal court.

Step 3: Issue Your Currency

Say goodbye to the U.S. dollar and hello to the "Dakotabuck," "Plains Peso," or "Rugby Rupie."

Print your own money and watch inflation rise faster than the North Dakota wind.

Make sure to include the face of your nation's founder (that’s you) on every bill.

Coins can be a bit tricky, but bottle caps make a rustic yet practical substitute.

Step 4: Create Your Nation's Flag

There is no right way to come up with a flag, whether you take the route of Susan B. Anthony and sew the first iteration of your new flag, head to photoshop to tinker around, or pick up some crayons and start doodling.

It is important that your neighbors can see you literally fly your own flag.

Step 5: Seek International Recognition

While formal recognition from the United Nations might be a stretch, other micronations around the globe are always on the lookout for new allies. Consider reaching out to:

  • Sealand: The infamous sea fort turned sovereign nation off the coast of England.
  • Liberland: The libertarian paradise on the banks of the Danube between Croatia and Serbia.
  • Molossia: Nestled in Nevada, Molossia is a shining example of how one man's backyard can become a nation's capital.
  • Westartica: A welcoming micronation that lets anyone become a citizen, and claims 1/8th of the landmass of Antarctica.

None of those sound good? Well check out a list of the world's most prominent micronations.

Step 6: Host a National Event

To put your micronation on the map, host a grand event. It could be a festival, a coronation, or a cheese-rolling competition.

Invite neighboring North Dakotans to join in the fun and, with any luck, recruit a few new citizens.

Just be sure to keep an eye out for any usurpers attempting a coup d'état, and be wary of any espionage attempts from surrounding nations.

The Perks of Micronation Life

Living in your own country comes with perks that most can only dream of. Declare yourself emperor, president, or grand poobah.

Award yourself the highest honors and titles. Impose (or eliminate) taxes as you see fit.

Plus, you can design a national anthem that’s just one long guitar solo, if that’s your jam.

The Challenges

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing. You might have to fend off the occasional skeptical local or bewildered postal worker.

And there’s the small matter of federal and state authorities who may not be as enthusiastic about your newfound independence.

However, as the proud leader of your micronation, you're well-equipped to handle any international diplomatic crises that come your way.

So, if you've ever fancied yourself a monarch or dreamed of ruling a land where you make the rules, North Dakota awaits. Your kingdom, queendom, or republic is just a declaration away. Embrace the spirit of adventure, and who knows? You might just end up on the map (albeit a very specialized one).

Note: This publication does not endorse secessionist movements or any actions that could lead to legal complications.

Again, and it cannot be stressed enough, this is an insanely dumb idea and should not be attempted by anyone.

The sovereignty of Micronations are not geopolitically recognized. In the best case scenario, you would be laughed at, and in the worst-case scenario, you would incur the wrath of the U.S. military.

What may seem like a fun hobby or a political stunt may, in fact, be light treason.

This author, your friends, your community, your state, your country, and the world as a whole will gleefully laugh at you as you face the consequences of your actions.
