Homeowners in Williston may soon have more freedom to expand their front porches after city leaders took the first step toward changing local building rules.

At its meeting Tuesday, the Williston City Commission approved the first reading of Ordinance 1168, a measure that would allow uncovered porches and decks to stretch across the entire length of a home. The current code restricts such structures to no more than four feet wider than a house’s entrance.

City planners said the adjustment reflects a practical need. Staff Planner Lisa Weidner told commissioners the city received numerous applications this summer for porches that exceeded the current limit. Many of those requests had to be denied, which prompted a review of the ordinance.

Weidner explained the original rule was written with covered porches in mind, where extending too far could obstruct sightlines or affect neighborhood character. By contrast, she said uncovered porches do not pose the same visibility or design concerns. “It’s intended to alleviate some of the restrictions and provide a little more flexibility to homeowners,” Weidner said. “It gives them the opportunity to create additional seating areas or a space to decorate without changing the look of the neighborhood.”

The ordinance must pass a second reading at the commission’s Sept. 23 meeting before taking effect. If approved, residents could apply for permits under the updated standard later this fall.
