
Williston Police Chief Peterson Out After 17 Years
In a statement released by the City of Williston, Chief of Police David Peterson and the City of Williston have agreed to mutually part ways, effective Saturday, May 24th.
The press release says that Peterson, who has been on administrative leave since December of 2024, and the City of Williston agreed to an Early Retirement Incentive.
Williston Mayor Howard Klug thanked Peterson for his 17 years of service and remarked on the career of the chief, "We thank him for his years of dedication to the safety and well-being of Williston's residents; wish him continuous success in his future endeavors."
In expressing his thanks to the community, Peterson stated that, “It has been a true privilege to lead the men and women of the Williston Police Department. I am proud of what we have achieved together and remain confident in the Department’s ongoing commitment to serving this community with professionalism and honor." Peterson continued. "I look forward to my next chapter with gratitude for my time at the Williston Police Department.”

Captain Steve Gutknecht will remain as Interim Chief of Police until a permanent Chief of Police is named.
