The Williston Area Chamber of Commerce and the Western Star Foundation are partnering to bring an important community event to the region — a Mental Health First Aid Training session scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The full-day session, to be held at TrainND–Northwest, 415 22nd Ave. NE in Williston, will equip participants with the skills to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. The evidence-based program, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), is administered nationally by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and has become a vital training resource for workplaces, schools and community organizations across the country.

Instructor Calli Thorne will lead the course, helping attendees recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use concerns, learn effective ways to interact with people experiencing crises, and connect them with the appropriate resources for help. Participants will also gain tools to manage their own stress and well-being.

In addition to the MHFA curriculum, the Upper Missouri District Health Unit will provide instruction on recognizing opioid overdoses and administering Narcan, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Coffee and lunch will be provided during the training.

Registration is open now through the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce website. The cost to attend is $50 for Chamber members and $75 for non-members.

Event organizers said the training offers both practical skills and vital awareness for community members, especially as conversations around mental health continue to grow across the region.
