Wolves Run Past Coyotes for First Rivalry Win
Watford City leaned on its ground game Friday night, rolling to a 48-6 win over Williston for the Wolves’ first victory in the young “Battle of the Bakken” rivalry.
Running back Rhylie Ledahl-Berger powered the Wolves’ attack, rushing for 133 yards and four touchdowns before exiting in the third quarter with an injury. Watford City attempted just one pass all night, relying almost exclusively on misdirection runs that kept the Coyotes on their heels. The Wolves scored on every first-half possession but one, a drive that ended with a fumble recovered by Williston at its own 35-yard line.
The Coyotes struck first, driving down the field on the game’s opening series and capping it with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Colin Mquision to Leo Kendor. But momentum swung quickly as penalties stalled Williston throughout the night. Three plays of more than 30 yards were erased by flags, part of 13 penalties that cost the Coyotes 80 yards.
Despite the lopsided score, Williston found positives. The Coyotes cracked the scoreboard for the first time this season and saw flashes of rhythm in the passing game as Mquision and fellow quarterback Noah Rath continue to split time. The contest also marked the season debut of running back Domonic Thompson, returning healthy to the lineup.
Williston, now 0-3, travels to Grand Forks next week to face Red River.
