Stanley, the renowned manufacturer of outdoor and travel gear, has announced a recall of approximately 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs due to a potential burn hazard. The recall was issued on December 12, 2024, after reports surfaced of the mugs' lids detaching during use, posing a risk of burns to consumers.

The affected products, sold in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes, were available in various colors, including white, black, and green. They feature a polypropylene lid with the Stanley logo visible on both the front and bottom of the mug. The recalled travel mugs can be identified by a product identification number located on the bottom of the mug, as detailed in the list below:

  • Switchback Mugs:
    12 oz. - 20-01437
    16 oz. - 20-01436, 20-02211
  • Trigger Action Mugs:
    12 oz. - 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
    16 oz. - 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
    20 oz. - 20-02034, 20-02746

According to Stanley, the lids of these travel mugs can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, leading to detachment during use. This defect has resulted in 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the U.S., of lids coming off during use, with 38 reported burn injuries, two of which occurred in the United States. Eleven of these injuries required medical attention.

The affected mugs were sold between June 2016 and December 2024 through various retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target, with prices ranging from $20 to $50. Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, which will include free shipping.
