North Dakota Check Your Snack Drawer For These Recalled Items

Because they may contain Salmonella, an organism that can infect young children, the elderly and frail, and others with compromised immune systems, Palmer Candy Company, Sioux City, Iowa, is recalling its "White Coated Confectionary Items."

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection in healthy people include fever, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes bloody diarrhea. Rarely, a Salmonella infection can allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious conditions including arthritis, endocarditis, and arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms).

Retail and wholesale distribution of the recalled confectionary items occurred across the country.

The recalled sweets were sold to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming in addition to Walmart, HyVee, Target, and Dollar General across the country.

Retail packaging for the product includes bags, pouches and tubs.

Up to yet, no illnesses associated with this issue have been documented.

Its liquid coating provider alerted Palmer Candy to the possibility of salmonella contamination from an ingredient that might have come from one of their suppliers.

While FDA and the company look into the root of the issue, product production has been halted.
