Another Weather Whiplash: Snow, Rain, and 60 MPH Winds Headed for Western North Dakota
Just when it feels like spring might be trying to sneak into the Northern Plains, another round of classic North Dakota weather is preparing to roll through the state.
According to reports from KX News, a fast-moving clipper system is expected to move into North Dakota on Thursday, bringing a mix of snow, rain, and very strong winds to much of the region.
Clipper systems are common across the northern Plains during late winter and early spring. These storms typically move quickly but can pack a punch with bursts of snow and powerful winds. That appears to be the case with this upcoming system.

When the Storm Arrives
The system is expected to begin moving into the region early Thursday morning, between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m., and continue through the afternoon hours.
Northern parts of the state are expected to remain mostly snow throughout the event, while central and southern North Dakota may experience a transition from snow to rain as temperatures climb during the day.
Expected Snowfall
While this system is not expected to produce widespread heavy snowfall, some areas could still see measurable accumulation.
Forecast models are currently suggesting 2 to 4 inches of snow for areas north of Highway 2. Communities across that northern tier could see the highest totals if snow bands line up in the right locations.
For central North Dakota, snowfall totals may be lighter, with 1 to 2 inches possible before precipitation changes over to rain later in the day.

Strong Winds Could Be the Biggest Concern
One of the biggest factors with this system may not be the snow totals, but the wind.
Forecasters are calling for sustained winds between 35 and 40 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 60 miles per hour. If those strong gusts coincide with falling snow, drivers could experience rapidly reduced visibility and localized blowing snow.
Drivers across the state should be prepared for changing road conditions and brief periods of difficult travel, particularly during the morning and midday hours on Thursday.
Another System on the Horizon
And if that wasn’t enough weather drama, forecasters are already tracking another system expected to arrive this weekend.
Early projections show a moderate risk for impactful snow Saturday into Sunday, especially across central and southern North Dakota. While details are still developing, the potential exists for hazardous travel conditions if the storm strengthens.
