It's almost tax day, as the April 15 deadline is barreling upon us, and while it may be a significantly stressful time for many in North Dakota, we actually don't have it as bad as the majority of other states across the nation.

The personal-finance website WalletHub today released its 2025 Tax Burden by State report that shows just how good we here in the Peace Garden State have it.

WalletHub compared the 50 states based on the three components of state tax burden, including metrics in property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes as a share of total personal income to determine which states tax their residents the most.

Tax Burden in North Dakota:
  • 43rd – Overall Tax Burden (6.61%)
  • 35th – Property Tax Burden (2.28%)
  • 41st – Individual Income Tax Burden (0.85%)
  • 23rd – Total Sales & Excise Tax Burden (3.48%)

Looking at the rest of the results, Hawaii has the highest overall tax burden, while Alaska came in with the lowest.

As for our surrounding neighbors:

Wyoming ranked 49th in tax burden.

South Dakota landed right in the middle of North Dakota and Wyoming, ranking 46th overall.

Montana saw a jump of ten spots above South Dakota, coming in with the 36th overall tax burden on its citizens.

Finally, Minnesota ranked just outside of the top 10, coming in as the 11th heaviest tax burden throughout the nation.

Across the nation, it was also found that states that voted Democrat in the last presidential election have more than 100% of the tax burden than that of states that voted Republican.

While we may not like to pay our taxes, it is the cost of having roads to drive on, a military to protect us, and hundreds of other services that we may not think of but positively impact millions of Americans.
