North Dakota’s 2024 crime report was recently released, showing crime continued to trend downward statewide, even as increases were seen in several violent offenses and financial losses tied to property crime grew.

A total of 45,964 serious crimes were reported during the year, down 7.2% from 2023. Those offenses are classified as crimes against persons, property or society. Overall, the state’s crime rate declined 8.6%, representing the sharpest year-over-year drop in recent years.

Property crime declined 9.8% and made up nearly half of all reported offenses. Even with fewer crimes being committed across the state, the loses as the result of those crimes increased, with the value of stolen property exceeding $64 million, the highest total reported in five years. Recovery rates continued to slip, with just under 27% of stolen property recovered.

Violent crime trends were uneven. Fewer murders were reported, down 20.8%, and aggravated assaults declined nearly 10%. At the same time, increases were recorded in several categories, including a 4% rise in reported rapes, a sharp increase in statutory rape cases, and an 8.1% increase in kidnappings.

Crimes against society also declined overall. Drug- and narcotics-related offenses fell slightly but still accounted for more than 11,000 reported incidents statewide. Impaired driving remained a concern, as DUI arrests increased 6.6% to 4,614.

30,165 arrests were reported during the year, a 2.4% increase from 2023. Much of that increase was attributed to DUI arrests, liquor law violations and other public-order offenses.
