North Dakota households continue to carry among the lowest increases in credit card debt nationwide.

That is according to new figures from WalletHub who laid out the bag of snakes that is information from our Federal Reserve.

In the second quarter of 2025, North Dakota’s total credit card debt rose by about $56.4 million, ranking 48th in the country for overall increases. The average household now owes $9,132 on credit cards, well below the national household average of $10,951.

Nationally, Americans added $28 billion in credit card debt in Q2 — a smaller jump than the year before, though balances remain historically high at $1.32 trillion. While total debt is still 13% below the all-time peak, households remain under pressure from inflation and higher interest rates.

Compared to neighboring states, North Dakota’s increase remains modest. Minnesota saw a $421 million rise, while South Dakota added about $65 million. Montana, often close to North Dakota in economic indicators, posted an $86.7 million jump. Each of those states also carries slightly higher average household balances, ranging from about $9,700 in Minnesota to just over $10,000 in Montana.

WalletHub analysts noted that slower growth in debt may reflect households becoming more cautious, though many still rely on credit to cover everyday costs.

For those of us in the Peace Garden State, the relatively low increase potentially means stronger household balance sheets than much of the nation, although there are still some of us who tip the scales in both directions.
