New Military Monument to Grace Hillside Memory Gardens in Williston ND
The Williston Basin Military Affairs Committee is currently fundraising for a new military monument to be placed at the entrance of Hillside Memory Gardens. The monument, named "Patriot Gate," will feature two statues: one depicting a Gold Star mother kneeling on both knees and the other showing a soldier kneeling on one knee. This unique memorial will honor not only those who fell in battle but also their families.
The site will include an illuminated flag and a built-in bench featuring the seals of all six military branches, making it a meaningful resting place for those using the adjacent walking and biking paths.
The improvements, called Patriot Gate, will involve removing the lawn at the entrance of Hillside Memory Gardens, paving the area, and installing the statues and benches. The monument is designed to be a multi-generational attraction, resonating with both veterans and those who appreciate their service.
The Williston Basin Military Affairs Committee, a very ambitious group of local volunteers, is leading the project, projected to cost $150,000, which started in 2022. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has a track record of effectively finishing large-scale projects.
The committee has previously completed two major projects. In 2019, they designed, funded, and constructed the Freedom Monument in Veterans Plaza at Riverview Cemetery, which cost $240,000.
In 2021, they rededicated a monument to the Unknown Soldier, a project costing $25,000, with the original replica now displayed at the Williston Basin International Airport.
The committee remains confident in raising the necessary funds for the Patriot Gate project, with plans to begin construction as soon as the frost thaws next year.
