Windbreak Renovation Assistance for North Dakota Landowners Affected by Wildfires
In early October, wildfires tore through North Dakota, burning thousands of acres, including critical field and homestead windbreaks and native forest areas. These windbreaks, or tree rows, are vital for the region’s ecosystem, providing erosion control, wildlife habitat, and other essential services that support rural communities and agriculture.
Windbreak Renovation Initiative Offers Recovery Support to North Dakota Landowners Impacted by Wildfires
To aid in the recovery, the North Dakota Forest Service (NDFS), with support from the Outdoor Heritage Fund, has launched the Windbreak Renovation Initiative. This grant program provides technical and financial assistance to landowners whose windbreaks were damaged by the fires. With this initiative, the NDFS aims to help landowners restore this critical conservation infrastructure, contributing to a healthier, more resilient landscape.
Free Windbreak Assessments and Renovation Plans Available to Support Wildfire Recovery
Under the initiative, landowners can work with NDFS staff to receive a free, customized windbreak assessment and renovation plan. NDFS Forest Stewardship Manager Matt Olson emphasized the importance of rebuilding these green barriers, noting, “Our hearts go out to those impacted by these devastating wildfires. This cost-share opportunity aims to help rebuild the essential green infrastructure that protect our fields, livestock, and homes.”
Funds from the Outdoor Heritage Fund will help cover expenses related to tree removals, replanting, and other restoration practices necessary for windbreak renewal.
For landowners interested in participating, more information and a request for a site visit can be found at Windbreak Renovation Site. Questions can be directed to Matt Olson at (701) 683-4323 or matthew.p.olson@ndsu.edu. This program offers an opportunity to restore vital resources and protect the landscape for future generations.
