Labor Day Weekend Safety Starts Now in North Dakota
Here is one more reminder as Labor Day weekend kicks off. North Dakota residents are encouraged to prioritize safety in their celebrations. With increased travel and festivities, the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) is ramping up efforts to prevent alcohol-related accidents and ensure a safe holiday for everyone.
Starting Friday, August 30, the NDHP will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Williams County. This operation, in partnership with the Williams County Sheriff’s Office and the Williston Police Department, is part of a broader enforcement campaign to keep roads safe during the busy holiday. These checkpoints are strategically placed to deter impaired driving and remove dangerous drivers before they can cause harm.
“During this holiday weekend, our goal is to ensure everyone can celebrate safely. If you choose to drive impaired, you’re not just risking your own life but the lives of everyone on the road. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over,” emphasized NDHP Northwest Regional Sergeant Preston Langer.
This proactive effort responds to alarming statistics: as of August 18, North Dakota has seen 55 fatalities in 51 crashes this year, with around 16% involving alcohol. These numbers underscore the importance of continued vigilance to prevent further tragedies.
The NDHP will release the results of their Labor Day enforcement activities next week. As you enjoy the holiday weekend, remember that safety should always be your top priority—so drive sober or find a safe way to get home. Be safe out there, and have a great Labor Day weekend!
