Tomorrow is a big day for drivers in North Dakota. All of our local law enforcement agencies have done a fantastic job alerting us about these new laws. Here is another reminder,  On August 1, 2023, there will be some big changes to North Dakota's traffic rules. These changes are meant to make driving safer and encourage people to drive responsibly. All drivers in the state need to know about these new rules to avoid getting tickets or getting into crashes. Let's look at the changes: one more time.

Seatbelt

Everyone needs to wear a seatbelt for safety first.

On August 1, 2023, all people in a car, no matter how old they are or where they sit, will have to wear seatbelts or other safe measures. For children under 8 years old, a properly placed car seat is a must. This change is meant to cut down on the number of injuries and deaths caused by car crashes. It also stresses how important it is to buckle up every time you drive.

Roundabouts: Tell others what you plan to do.

If you are driving and come across a circle, don't forget to use your blinker. The new rule says that drivers must let other drivers know when they want to leave a rotary traffic island, also called a roundabout. Signaling lets other drivers know what you're going to do next. It also helps keep traffic moving smoothly through crossings, which makes driving safer.

Stop Sign

At stop signs, everyone gets a chance to go.

At crossings with stop signs, drivers must now give the right of way to cars that have already stopped. This rule makes sure that every driver has the same chance to get through the crossing safely. This reduces the chance of accidents and makes traffic flow better.

Windshield Tint: Watch Out for the Strip

North Dakota lets people tint their windows, but the new rule only lets people tint the top 5 inches of the windshield. This change is meant to keep drivers' lines of sight clear, especially when the weather is bad or they are going at night, to make the roads safer overall.

Windshield Problems: A Clear View of the Road Ahead

Drivers must make sure that their windshields are not broken or in any other way that would make it hard to see the road. Clear vision is important for safe driving, so if your windshield is broken, replace it right away.

Registration

Get your car registered online

In this modern age, it is easier to show proof that your car is registered. As of August 1, 2023, a digital image of your registration card saved on a mobile device can be used as proof of registration in North Dakota. To meet this new rule, make sure the picture on your phone is clear and up-to-date.

As these new laws take effect, the Williams County Sheriff's Department wants to remind drivers how important it is to be responsible and follow the rules. Learn about these changes to escape fines or other legal problems and, more importantly, to help make the roads safer for everyone.

Remember that traffic rules are there not only to keep things running smoothly but also to keep you and other drivers safe. By staying aware and following these changes, you can help make driving in North Dakota safer for everyone. Drive safely and keep your eyes open!
