Haunted Histories Come Alive in North Dakota at Fort Buford’s Ghost Walk!
Halloween is right around the corner, and with it comes the annual "Ghost Walk" at Fort Buford State Historic Site near Williston! If you're looking for a spooky yet fun and family-friendly activity, this is it. The best part? It’s free and open to the public.

The "Ghost Walk" kicks off at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 19th, with the last group departing at 8:15 p.m. As you walk along the illuminated boardwalks, guided by solar lights, you’ll hear eerie tales from Fort Buford’s haunted history. These aren’t just any ghost stories, though—these are spirits with a historical twist. So bring your curiosity, and maybe even a flashlight!
After your supernatural stroll, you can warm up with refreshments at the nearby Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center. It’s the perfect spot to relax and chat about which ghost gave you the biggest goosebumps.
Now, here’s an extra tidbit: Brandon Delvo (6th Infantry board member or local historian) pointed out during a recent conversation that, by military law, when a post is decommissioned, many buried bodies are relocated. In Fort Buford's case, most of the burials were moved to the Little Big Horn Battlefield cemetery, so just a few residents remain to keep you company. Talk about getting into the Halloween spirit!
Managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota, both Fort Buford and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center are great spots for history buffs and ghost hunters alike.
