Williston Junior Seeks Community Support in National Contest
A familiar face on the Williston High School basketball court is asking for the community’s support as he pursues a national recognition that could help shape his future.
Joel Isaias Heraldez, a junior at Williston High, is in the running for the Athlete of the Year contest, hosted at athleteoftheyear.org.
The award highlights student-athletes across the country who show dedication to their sport, strong character, and commitment to their community.
Joel’s journey in basketball began when he was just four years old in Bakersfield, California, where his father first put a ball in his hands. Since then, the sport has been more than just a game—it’s been a lifelong passion. Hours of training, summer camps, and team practices shaped him into the player he is today.
In 2020, Joel’s family moved to Williston when his father took a new job opportunity. The transition wasn’t easy. Starting over meant adjusting to a new school, making friends, and proving himself on a new basketball team. But Joel’s determination and work ethic helped him find his place.
Now, as a junior, he has his eyes on both leading the Coyotes to a strong season and chasing his personal dream of playing college basketball at a high level. He hopes to one day make it to the NBA—or follow another dream of becoming a dentist.
Winning Athlete of the Year would not only be a proud moment for Joel and the Williston community but would also provide financial support toward his college education.
The contest allows supporters to vote once every 24 hours, meaning community involvement could make all the difference.

"I want to continue being a positive role model for my brothers and honor God and my parents, whom I love very much." Joel said. "Thank you, Dad and Mom, for being my number one supporters, helping me train every day, and providing me with the resources I need.
