According to the reports received by the Sheriff's Office, the scam involves fraudulent callers posing as supervisors from the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office. These imposters are contacting individuals, falsely claiming to represent law enforcement and demanding money.

In response to this alarming trend, the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant and to take specific precautions to avoid falling victim to this scam. Here are some important reminders and steps to follow:

  1. Be Wary of Unsolicited Calls: The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that they do not solicit funds via phone calls. If you receive a call requesting money purportedly on behalf of law enforcement, exercise caution.
  2. Verify Court Payments: If you are asked to make a payment for court-related purposes, always verify the legitimacy of the request. Contact the McKenzie County Clerk of Court directly to confirm the necessity of any payments before taking any action.

In the event that you receive a suspicious call, the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office advises the following course of action:

  1. Gather Information: Take note of the caller's name and phone number. This information can be crucial for law enforcement in tracking down and apprehending the perpetrators.
  2. End the Call: Once you have collected the necessary information, promptly end the call. Do not engage further with the caller or provide any personal or financial details.
  3. Report the Incident: Contact the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office immediately and provide them with the details of the suspicious call, including the name and phone number of the caller. Reporting such incidents promptly can aid law enforcement in their efforts to combat these scams and protect the community.

Residents are reminded that vigilance is key to preventing falling victim to scams. If you receive any unsolicited calls or encounter suspicious activity, do not hesitate to reach out to local law enforcement for assistance. This is happening in McKenzie County, but all residents in the Mon-Dak region could be contacted as well, so it's something to be aware of.

For further assistance or to report any suspicious calls, individuals are encouraged to contact the local communications center at 701-444-3654.

By remaining informed and proactive, residents can help safeguard themselves and their community against fraudulent activities. Together, we can combat scams and protect the integrity of our neighborhoods.
