Youth Ice Fishing Derby: Family-Friendly Event At Blacktail Dam, ND
Winter still has a good grip on the northern plains for another few months. You and the kids might find yourselves going stir-crazy. The kids especially might need something to do. Let me suggest some ice fishing! Three local groups are getting things put together for a youth ice fishing derby on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

Join Williams County Parks, United Sportsmen of Williston and the Blacktail Dam Association for a fun-filled afternoon at Blacktail Dam for the annual Kids Ice Fishing Derby! There is no entry fee to participate. Please bring your poles and tackle; bait will be provided. Be sure to enter the drawing for door prizes! Organizers have announced the fun starts at 10:00am and lasts until 4:00pm, so that's plenty of time to land the whopper!
There are a few rules everyone needs to follow:
- Open to youth ages 15 and under; all youth must be accompanied by an adult.
- Fish houses, tents/clams, and sonar are allowed
- Residents and nonresidents age 16 and older need a fishing license.
Residents under age 16 may take and possess a limit of fish without a fishing license. Any nonresident under age 16 may take and possess a limit of fish without a nonresident fishing license if accompanied by an individual possessing a valid fishing license. Visit the Game and Fish website to purchase a license online.
