Montana youth hunters have a chance to showcase their skills and celebrate the state’s hunting heritage in the third annual Youth Hunting Story Contest.

The contest, which was started by Governor Gianforte, is open to Montana residents aged 10 to 17, invites young hunters and apprentice hunters to share a story about their 2024 hunting experience, along with a photo from their hunt. The submission deadline is fast approaching on December 2, 2024.

Participants must submit a story of up to 500 words, accompanied by a photo that captures a memorable moment from their hunting experience. To be eligible, contestants must hold a valid Montana hunting license or apprentice certification and may submit stories about harvesting any legally hunted game, furbearer animals, or birds within the state.

Governor Greg Gianforte will personally select 10 winners, with five chosen from the 10 to 13 year old age group and another five from the 14 to 17 year old age group. Winners will be announced in late December and will receive an invitation to the Montana State Capitol in January to celebrate their accomplishments with the governor.

The contest comes with some impressive prizes, thanks to a line-up of dedicated sponsors that includes Sitka, Stone Glacier, Kenetrek Boots, J2 Taxidermy, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Murdoch’s, and the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association. These partners have provided a range of awards aimed at encouraging young hunters to continue their engagement with Montana’s outdoor traditions.
