Cabin Fever Cure: Williston, North Dakota Invites Adults to a Creative Winter Escape
As we inch our way through winter, there’s a little good news to celebrate: the days are slowly getting longer. It might only be a minute or two at a time, but we’ll take it. Add in the recent warm snap around Williston, and suddenly people are venturing outside again—walking the dog, running errands without five layers, or just standing in the sunshine pretending spring is right around the corner.
Still, winter in North Dakota has a way of feeling long. Really long. By January, cabin fever starts to set in, and many of us are searching for something—anything—to break up the routine. If you’ve been looking for a fun way to escape the winter blues, this might be just the thing.

Beat the Winter Blues With a One-Day Adult Art Camp in Williston
This winter, residents of Williston are invited to tap into their creative side at a one-day Adult Art Camp on Saturday, January 17, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The camp is hosted by Williston Area Visual Artists, The James Memorial Arts Center, the Dakota Prairie Quilter Guild, and Amanda Skinner of the North Dakota Council on the Arts. It’s designed for all skill levels, from total beginners to folks who already have a creative hobby—high school age and up are welcome.
Throughout the day, participants can try a variety of hands-on activities, including simple sewing, yarn crafts, eraser printing, and artist-grade colored pencils. No pressure, no perfection required—just a chance to experiment, learn something new, and maybe surprise yourself. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with others in the community who are just as ready for a creative break from winter as you are.
The event also highlights the mental health benefits of creativity. A Credible Mind booth will be on site with resources for mental wellness and local mental health support, tying into the Upper Missouri District Health Unit’s campaign promoting creative engagement as a tool for well-being.

“Engaging in creative activities can help reduce feelings of isolation, promote well-being, and foster community,” said event organizer Daphne Clark. “This art camp is a fun, hands-on way for adults to explore new hobbies, meet people, and take a break from the winter gloom.”
The camp is open to all adults, with a $25 registration fee. Couples or friends can attend together for a reduced rate of $20 each—so grab a friend and make a day of it.
