Fair season is officially underway, and for many people, that means one thing: making memories. From thrilling rides and delicious fair food to spending time with family and friends, county fairs have long been a summertime tradition. But beyond the midway and grandstand events, there is another part of the fair that deserves some attention—the Open Class exhibits.

Years ago, when I served on the fair board in Williston, one of our goals was to encourage more participation in the Open Class competitions. It was always amazing to see the creativity and talent that exists throughout our community. Whether it was a beautifully decorated cake, an impressive garden vegetable, a stunning photograph, or a handcrafted woodworking project, the exhibits never failed to impress.

The good news is that the opportunity continues again this year at the Upper Missouri Valley Fair.

A Chance to Learn, Compete, and Inspire

Entries are open to both youth and adults, making it a fun activity for the entire family. Categories include photography, baking, gardening, woodworking, sewing, arts and crafts, and many others. In fact, if you have something unique that doesn't fit into a traditional category, there's a good chance there's still a place for it.

Participating in the Open Class competition is about more than ribbons. It's an opportunity to showcase your hard work, learn from others, and become part of a tradition that celebrates local talent and creativity. The friendly competition adds excitement, and seeing your work displayed for fairgoers can be incredibly rewarding.
