Shopping season is about to kick into high gear, and if you’ve found yourself staring at your online cart thinking, “If only there was a store for this in town…” — you’re not alone. I asked on our KEYZ Facebook page what kind of businesses Williston needs, and wow—215 comments later, it’s clear that residents have opinions (and maybe a little shopping wish list of their own).

Sams Club and Costco

Let’s Start With The Heavy Hitters

Costco and Sam’s Club were mentioned more times than I could keep track of. Apparently, Williston loves the idea of buying 48 rolls of paper towels and a 10-pound tub of cheese balls in one go.

There Were Other Great Suggestions

Target, Hobby Lobby, and Trader Joe’s also topped the list—because who doesn’t want to browse throw pillows, trail mix, and Christmas decorations all in the same trip?

Then came the nostalgia. One resident reminisced about the good ol’ days of Joseph’s, Hendricks, and Sears—when you could shop downtown, grab a bite at the Luzon Café, and maybe swing by the Elks Club later. Others agreed that while big box stores are nice, keeping small, local businesses thriving is what makes Williston feel like home.

Family Friendly Options Were Strongly Suggested

Of course, it wasn’t all about shopping. Several folks championed more family-friendly entertainment—a roller rink, indoor mini golf, or an adventure park. One clever commenter even requested a “Chunky Cheese,” which honestly sounds like the North Dakota version of Chuck E. Cheese and we’re here for it.

And let’s not forget the practical dreamers who want more restaurants, grocery stores, and men’s clothing options. (Apparently, the fellas are tired of choosing between jeans and... more jeans.)

So what’s next for Williston? Maybe not a Costco tomorrow—but one thing’s clear: our town is growing, dreaming, and still has plenty of room for a few more stores, a little more fun, and a lot more community spirit.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.

LOOK: Things from the year you were born that don't exist anymore

The iconic (and at times silly) toys, technologies, and electronics have been usurped since their grand entrance, either by advances in technology or breakthroughs in common sense. See how many things on this list trigger childhood memories—and which ones were here and gone so fast you missed them entirely.
