Williston’s Fire Crew Tackles Smoke Incident At Local Hospital
The Williston Fire Department was called to CHI St. Alexius Health Williston Medical Center late Sunday afternoon after staff reported a smell of electrical smoke and a loud popping sound in the hospital’s Emergency Department.
Williams County Dispatch sent fire crews at 4:40 p.m. The initial response included two engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance, and command staff. Police were also dispatched to assist with traffic control and security, while Williams County Emergency Management helped coordinate operations.
The first fire engine arrived at 4:46 p.m. Crews quickly determined the source of the problem was a malfunctioning HVAC unit located above the Emergency Department. Firefighters shut down power to the affected area and helped ventilate smoke from the building. Officials confirmed there was no active fire.
As a precaution, CHI St. Alexius activated its emergency operations plan and temporarily relocated Emergency Department services to another part of the hospital. Patients continued to receive care without interruption.
By 6:00 p.m., fire crews had cleared the scene and turned operations back over to hospital maintenance staff. The Emergency Department remains open in its temporary location.

The Williston Fire Department praised the hospital for its quick response and coordination, noting that the incident was contained without injuries or further damage.
