The Williston Coyotes hit the road Friday night to face the Watford City Wolves in a highly anticipated Western Dakota Association matchup at Fridley Field.

This “Battle of the Bakken has only been played four times, but each meeting has been memorable.

Williston (0-2 in AAA) has claimed all four, including a dominant 41-0 win in 2019, a narrow 14-7 victory in 2021, a 40-6 triumph in 2022, and last year’s defensive showdown, a 12-0 Coyotes win.

While the all-time series favors Williston, the Wolves have home-field advantage and momentum from last week’s 39-12 win over Wahpeton.

Williston enters still searching for its first points after two lopsided losses. Quarterbacks Colin McCuistion and Noah Rath could rotate in tonight at QB1, aiming to connect with big-play threats Leo Kendor and Brian Teghen downfield. Red-zone target Chance Riveland is the go-to receiver inside the 20-yard line.

Junior running back Casey Storebakken could break a game-changing run at any moment. Defensively, linebacker Dylan Ekblad leads a unit prepared to slow a Wolves rushing attack that has accumulated over 600 yards through two games. Safeties and corners will look to force Watford City into passing situations, creating opportunities for disruptive plays from Grayden Bowles and others.

Running back Rhylie Ledahl-Berger leads Watford City (1-1 in AA) with an average of nearly 150 yards per game and five touchdowns already. Trystn DeVries adds explosive speed, including a 61-yard touchdown last week. Defensively, Harper Moberg, Bryson Wolf, and DeVries help set the physical tone, making the Wolves a run-heavy, hard-hitting team.
