North Dakota Remembers: The Real Meaning Behind Veterans, Memorial, and Armed Forces Days
How Williston Basin Military Affairs Supports Veterans Across Northwest North Dakota

- Veterans Day (November 11): A day to honor all military veterans—both living and deceased—who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Across the state, events and ceremonies express our deep gratitude for their service.
- Armed Forces Day (Third Saturday in May): This day is set aside to honor those actively serving in all branches of the U.S. military, celebrating their ongoing dedication and sacrifices to protect our freedoms. It’s a day for us to recognize and appreciate their commitment.
- Memorial Day (Last Monday in May): Memorial Day, observed on May 26, 2025, is a solemn occasion to remember military personnel who gave their lives in service. Originally known as Decoration Day, it emerged after the Civil War to honor fallen soldiers.

Knowing the difference between these days helps us observe each with the respect it deserves. A recent survey showed that only 46% of Americans knew Memorial Day specifically honors fallen military members, while 45% mistakenly believe it’s appropriate to wish veterans a “Happy Memorial Day.” Awareness helps all of us express appreciation in meaningful ways.
This Veterans Day, show your support by choosing veteran-owned businesses, attending local events, and taking time to honor the sacrifices made by our servicemembers. Together, let’s recognize their courage and commitment, ensuring their contributions are never forgotten.
