Twin Champions Honored With North Dakota’s Rough Rider Award
Gov. Kelly Armstrong will present North Dakota’s highest civilian honor to twin brothers and national champion wrestlers Terry and Troy Steiner during a ceremony this fall at the State Capitol.
The Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award will be awarded to the Steiners at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 in Memorial Hall. The ceremony will include the unveiling of official portraits that will be displayed in the Rough Rider Award Hall of Fame.
Armstrong announced in March that the Bismarck natives would be the 51st and 52nd recipients of the award, which recognizes current and former North Dakotans who have achieved national recognition in their fields and brought honor to the state.
The Steiners are widely known for their accomplishments in wrestling, both as athletes and coaches, earning national championships and contributing to the sport at the highest levels.
The Rough Rider Award was established during the 1961 Dakota Territory Centennial. It was originally given as an honorary rank of colonel in the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Riders and has since become the state’s top recognition for distinguished citizens.
The ceremony is open to the public and will be held on the first floor of the Capitol at 600 E. Boulevard Ave.
North Dakotans can be nominated for consideration through the Rough Rider Nomination page on the North Dakota Governor's website or by mailing or delivering nomination materials to the Governor's Office.
