Williams County Invests in the Future with Major Community Upgrades
Williams County is continuing to invest in what truly makes a community thrive—places to gather, play, and create lasting memories. With a long-term vision in mind, the county is rolling out new funding opportunities and supporting key projects in communities across Williams County, including Williston, all aimed at benefiting residents for years to come.

New Grant Program Targets Rural Communities
As part of a 10-year commitment to enhancing quality of life, Williams County will officially open applications for its new Rural Community Grant Program on April 13, 2026. This initiative is designed specifically for smaller communities with populations under 5,000, helping them develop and improve recreational spaces and community gathering areas.
A total of $2.35 million has been set aside for the first round of funding, which will span 2026 and 2027. Communities interested in applying can access details and application materials starting at 9:00 a.m. on launch day. The program highlights the county’s focus on making sure rural areas aren’t left behind when it comes to growth and opportunity.
Funding Approved for Tioga and Grenora Projects
The Williams County Board of County Commissioners has also approved funding for two impactful community-driven projects. The City of Tioga will receive $400,000 to support the construction of a new softball field, along with upgrades to its existing baseball field. These improvements will expand opportunities for youth sports, local leagues, and community events.

Meanwhile, the City of Grenora has been awarded $250,000 for the development of a new skatepark. This project will provide a dedicated space for youth recreation, giving kids and teens a safe and fun place to gather and stay active.
Fairgrounds Purchase Secures Long-Term Community Hub
Another major step forward is the county's recent purchase of the Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds. This investment ensures the fairgrounds will continue serving as a central hub for recreation, agriculture, and community events for years to come.
Each year, thousands of residents take part in activities ranging from archery and curling to equestrian and livestock events. The fairgrounds also host major annual events like the Upper Missouri Valley Fair and NDSU Extension’s 4-H Achievement Days, both of which are staples in the community.
Continued Support for Local Organizations and Events
Over the past several months, the county has worked closely with the eight organizations that operate within the fairgrounds, updating leases to ensure continued use and stability. The Upper Missouri Valley Fair Association will continue its long-standing tradition of hosting the annual fair, alongside other popular events and activities.
These partnerships are key to maintaining the fairgrounds as a vibrant and active space that serves residents of all ages.
Looking Ahead: Long-Term Improvements Planned
Looking ahead, Williams County plans to collaborate with local clubs and organizations over the next 12 to 18 months to develop a long-term improvement plan for the fairgrounds. The goal is to enhance usability while expanding opportunities for agriculture, equestrian, and livestock activities.
All of these efforts reflect a shared vision: building stronger communities by investing in the spaces and experiences that bring people together.
