The City of Williston has named Alyssa Nelson as the new director of communications and public affairs.

Nelson, who will step into the role in the coming weeks, brings more than 10 years of experience with the city. She most recently worked in the Public Works and Engineering Department, where she handled communications tied to daily operations, infrastructure projects and community services. In that role, complex public works activities were translated into clear, easy-to-understand information through public service announcements, website updates, social media and outreach efforts like Public Works Outreach Day.

Nelson holds an associate’s degree from Williston State College and is certified as a public information officer through the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services.

City Administrator Shawn Wenko said, “Alyssa has been with the City a long time and has an understanding of the day-to-day communications needs. She understands our operations and how to communicate them effectively. I look forward to seeing where she takes the department.”

Nelson said, “I’m excited to build a communications team that keeps our community informed, engaged, and confident in City services. My goal is to increase transparency, streamline how we share information across platforms, and create proactive messaging and outreach that makes it easier for residents to participate and stay informed.”

Nelson replaces former Communications Specialist Mitch Melberg, who earlier this year accepted a position as president of the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce.
