Western North Dakota was in the spotlight on Wednesday as Kelly Armstrong spent the day in Williston for a series of discussions and visits focused on rural health care, education, and workforce development. The visit underscored the growing importance of the region in shaping the future of opportunity across the state.

I had the opportunity to visit with Governor Armstrong earlier this morning about his recent visit. You can listen to it below:

Governor Armstrong’s day began with a roundtable discussion centered on rural health care challenges and solutions. Local leaders and providers shared insight into workforce shortages, access to care, and the importance of training health professionals locally. These conversations aligned closely with recent statewide developments, including the announcement that North Dakota Health and Human Services received nearly $199 million in year one funding through the Rural Health Transformation Program.

Investing in Rural Health Care and the Workforce of Tomorrow

The program focuses on four major initiatives: preventive care and healthy living, strengthening and stabilizing the rural health workforce, bringing high-quality care closer to home, and connecting technology, data, and providers across the state. Year one funds must be obligated by October 30, 2026, and spent by September 30, 2027, with grant opportunities expected to roll out in phases following federal approval.

From there, Governor Armstrong toured the new health care building at Williston State College. The facility is designed to provide hands-on training for students pursuing careers in nursing and other health sciences, helping create a direct pipeline from classroom to career. During the visit, Armstrong emphasized the importance of investing in facilities that allow students to train close to home and step directly into the local workforce.

Students Showcase Skills and Career Pathways at Williston High School

The afternoon continued at Williston High School during its Career and Technical Education Open House. Students showcased a wide range of programs, including welding, aviation, health sciences, construction, culinary arts, and more. The event highlighted how CTE programs are preparing students with real-world skills while allowing them to explore career paths early.

A key theme throughout the day was the strong partnership between Williston High School and Williston State College. By working together, the two institutions are helping students earn certifications, gain college credit, and build confidence before graduation—setting them up for success whether they choose to enter the workforce, continue their education, or both.

Governor Armstrong also took time to speak directly with students, educators, and community members, reinforcing the message that North Dakota needs their talent and is committed to supporting their success. His visit served as a reminder that collaboration between schools, colleges, health care providers, and local leaders is essential to long-term growth.

As Williston and western North Dakota continue to invest in education, workforce development, and health care innovation, Wednesday’s visit highlighted how the region is not only meeting today’s needs—but helping shape the future of the state.
