U.S. Border Patrol agents were stationed for several days near a business along Montana Highway 16 near Froid as they attempted to serve a federal immigration warrant on an adult male, whose name was not given, suspected of being in the country illegally and of making threats toward Border Patrol agents.

Authorities said the operation was conducted solely by U.S. Border Patrol and did not involve local law enforcement agencies or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Corey Frederick said his office was not initially involved in the operation but became aware of the situation as Border Patrol activity continued in the area. After being notified, Frederick offered to serve as an intermediary between Border Patrol officials and the man’s attorney in an effort to resolve the matter peacefully and minimize disruption to the community.

Following discussions between the parties, an agreement was reached, at which time the man surrendered himself to Sheriff Frederick.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Roosevelt County jail, where he is being held while awaiting transfer to a federal detention facility.

Local officials emphasized that there was no threat to public safety during the incident. Sheriff Frederick said the man posed no danger to the community at any point, and no evacuation or public safety measures were required while Border Patrol agents were present in the area.

Authorities also noted that the man and his family have lived in the community for more than a decade and have been productive members of the area. According to the sheriff’s office, the family has had no prior negative interactions with local law enforcement since moving to the region.
