Trapper Education Field Day Coming To Havre This August

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will host a Trapper Education Field Day on Saturday, Aug. 22, at its Havre field office, offering one of the few in-person training opportunities in northeast Montana this year.

The session will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s new office located at 21 River Road. Officials say it may be the only field day offered in the region this year and are encouraging prospective trappers to attend.

State law requires Montana residents age 12 and older to complete a trapper education course before purchasing a trapping license, unless they have held a license in at least three previous years in Montana or another state.

The program includes both an online course and a required in-person field day led by volunteer instructors. Participants will learn about trapping ethics, avoiding non-target species, fur handling and safety practices. The training also includes the state’s required wolf trapper certification.

Participants must complete the online portion before attending. The course typically takes six to eight hours and is available through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Organizers note that portions of the field day may take place outdoors, and attendees should dress accordingly. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but participants are asked to bring a lunch and may want to bring a lawn chair.

Registration is required in advance.

For those unable to attend, officials say Montana’s trapper apprentice program allows individuals age 10 and older to trap under the supervision of a mentor for up to two years before completing certification.
